I spent a little time today exploring an idea I have for an analytics service based on Twitter. This chart is the first hack I came up with. It shows the recent average number of Twitter posts per day containing various movie names. You can think of it as a real-time measure of each film’s buzz. If you click the chart, you’ll land on a page where, if you’re slightly geeky, you’ll see you can change the URL to generate a graph for up to 5 comma-separated keywords on any topic. Some other examples: politics, cell phones, lifestyle.
I think this sort of information could be interesting as a site that’s sort of like Google Trends / Insights for real-time Twitter data. I have a few hacks built in Yahoo! Pipes that demonstrate a number of views of the data. Pipes outputs data as RSS / XML / JSON, but I don’t know how to write actual code. If anyone is interested in helping me turn this into a simple site and expanding on the concept, please comment, reblog, or email me.
Thus ends my nerd project of the day.
This is pretty much fantastic. Joelaz and his neat-o Y! Pipes invention posts are one of my favorite things about Tumblr.
